Student who graduated and moved

I am a Florida resident who attended school in Georgia until Spring 2019. I then moved to Maryland. My federal taxes show the correct designation of Florida and Maryland as part-year residency, but when I did the Georgia state version because I earned in excess of $5000 as a student, I receive an message that says "your federal form indicates you are a part-year Georgia resident". Is this a bug? I want to file a non-resident form for Georgia, not a part year resident. I was never a Georgia resident, only a college student for 5 months.

If you had a domicile in Florida, and were away temporarily from Florida to attend school in Georgia, you are correct, you would not be a resident of Georgia.

When you start the Georgia return, you should have been asked what return you want to file for that state, to which you can choose non-resident. The federal return would not indicate anything about your state tax return resident status. However, there is a question in the federal section regarding states you lived in during the year, maybe that is where there is mention of you living in Georgia.

I suggest you review the "My Info" section in the federal area of TurboTax and make sure you didn't indicate that you lived in Georgia. Also, go back through your state return and see if you can change the filing status. You may need to delete the state return and start it from scratch to change your resident status.
