Question

Tax credit from prior year (which I received already) is being added into this years refund.

I received a federal and state refund on my 2018 tax returns.  This refunds were paid to me.  I am currently filing my 2019 return, and TurboTax is adding the 2018 refund as a credit.  This should not be the case, but I cannot figure out how to modify the refund amount.

Try this:

  • Go to Deductions & Credits
  • Scroll down to the subheading "Estimates and other taxes paid"
  • Click on Start for "Other Income Taxes"
  • Look for the subheading "2018 Refund applied to 2019"
  • Choose federal or state (whichever the refund was for)
  • If there is a value for the refund carried over, enter the number zero to zero it out - in fact, just enter a zero anyway for your situation

Let me know if this works for you, since I do not have a test case for this.
