Per IRS include on line 2a of your Form 1040 or 1040-SR any exempt-interest dividends from a mutual fund or other regulated investment company. This amount should be shown in box 12 of Form 1099-DIV.

Thanks MayaD.i was confused as the tax exempt line on 1040 income only mentions "interest",not "dividends". cant find anything definitive about this in instructions either.

Individual muni bonds usually generate "interest".but muni bond FUNDS send there interest payments to shareholders in the form of "dividends".

    any clarification?

    thanks

The IRS refers to them as 'exempt interest dividends' (from the link provided above).

"Also include on line 2a of your Form 1040 or 1040-SR any exempt-interest dividends from a mutual fund or other regulated investment company. This amount should be shown in box 12 of Form 1099-DIV."
