Hello, I have worked doing private homecare for 2 years at the same residence. Received checks and never was asked to fill out W9. Now 04/28/2025 I am being asked by the daughter of client that I need to fill out W9 for this previous tax year. It is past January 31st, and April 15th- her parents have a extension, im assuming. I have already filed, received refund etc for my taxes. They are withholding my paycheck till I fill out W9. I agreed from here forward to claim my income made, but if I give my SS # I will have a 1099 or whichever form used floating around and dont want to get in trouble with the IRS where I already filed and was not asked in the beginning to do a W9. What are my options, and what if I fill it out, will it come back negatively on me?

Did you report that income as self employment on your 2024 return?

It is possible that you have been a household employee---depending on how much you were paid and if all of the work was done in the people's home.   If you have been a household employee---the employer was supposed to issue a W-2 to you and withhold Social Security and Medicare.

So...before you comply with their request--determine if you were a household employee--maybe they are the ones who need to change what they did about the way you were paid.
