Question

Taxes paid to another state

I am a full-time resident of MD.

Paid local property taxes to VA, and will be paying capital gains taxes to VA for 3 farm properties sold in 2021.

In TurboTax, Deductions and Credits-- Property Taxes, it does not let me note whether a payment was for MD or VA.

Where do I note the portions paid to VA in the Federal form such that it is transferred to each state properly?

I have downloaded BOTH state products.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR HELP

There is no method of indicating that a property tax payment is tied to a particular state.  Similarly, when you enter the sales for the farm properties, you will not be able to indicate that the sale was for a Virginia property.

Instead, when you are working through the two state tax returns, you will need to allocate the capital gains from the sales to the Virginia return and remove the capital gains from your Maryland return.

Also, pay close attention as you go through the Virginia return to see if there is a state deduction associated with your property tax payment.
