"I am married and I file taxes with my husband. I am also a studyent and I recieved pell grant. For my first semester i had to pay 260$ more, pell grant did not cover those. Now, for my second semester, my pell grany does not cover everything again and I have to pay 266$ more dollars. How should I proceed for my tax return? Can I claim an education tax credit because I spent extra 500$, or should I count those as a deduction. Thank you for your help."

You may be able to claim an education credit for the amounts that you paid for qualifying educational expenses that were greater than your Pell Grant. Go to the Education Section and start on Expenses and Scholarships (Form 1098-T). Go through the entire interview, and answer all of the questions carefully. Enter your expenses and keep going until you get to the screen Did You Receive a Scholarship or Grant in 2018? and enter the amount of your Pell Grant.

Other than an Educational Tax Credit, there are no deductions available for education in 2018.
