Taxes won't efile- says update needed

When I click to transfer my tax return, it says an update is required and to go to the Online menu and check for updates.  When I do that, it says my software is up to date, but it still won't transmit- it continues to say an update is needed.

Your return probably contains a form or schedule that has not yet been finalized.  For current information on forms availability please click on the applicable link below:

In TurboTax CD/Download, if there are updates available  you will be prompted to download updates when you open the program.  You can also update the program while you have it open by following these steps:

    1. Click on the Online link in the black bar at the top of the page.
    2. Click on Check for Updates.
    3. TurboTax will download and install any updates available.  If there aren't any updates, you will receive the message "Your software is up to date."

When attempting to e-file a return in the TurboTax for Windows CD/Download software, this message appears:

There is an update available for your version of TurboTax. Before you can file electronically, you’ll need to get this update. To do this, go to the Online menu and select Check for Updates.

However, after updating, the same message continues to reappear, resulting in an endless loop.

    Workaround

Some customers have been able to successfully e-file with this workaround:

    1. Follow the steps in the article Troubleshoot TurboTax for Windows updating issues.
    2. Now try e-filing again. If that didn't work, first uninstall and then reinstall your TurboTax program.
    3. Finally, if you're still unable to e-file after following the above steps, you can either sign up to be notified by email when a fix has been released, or you can file a conventional paper return.

@moosema47  -  Please check the updated link, State Loop indicates TurboTax is "up to date" after updating but won't allow you to Install your sta... if the manual updates do not work for you.

This is terrible - i've tried everything and the software still will not transmit the efile forms - tried doing the federal only and got some validation error and told me to update - guess what, software is up to date per the update scripts.

I can't believe intuit shipped a broken product. I paid money for this and I have tried all of the fixes on the forums for this issue. It still doesn't work. After 15+ years of using this product there will not be another. The answer from the help line is file by paper or wait for us to get to it. Come on. Last year I had a glitch to they were able to get around.

I've had this happen to me many times filing while trying to e-file in 2019 & 2020. I find that the system is being updated either on the federal or state or TurboTax side. What I recommend to do is save your tax file, close out, give it a few hours or day or 2 days and come back and the system will ask you to update and you should be able to e-file thereafter.  Sometimes, it can take up to 2 days (this has happen to me before).  Be patient. I know it's nerve wrecking.

I am so frustrated.  I am having the same problem.  For 3 days I have been uninstalling, repairing, installing applying a variety of patches (not in that order)  and NOTHING!  Still get the message.  I did manage to file federal but not NYS.  And it is due tomorrow.  I see by the posts this problem is ongoing since February!!!!!!!  I cannot believe it hasn't been fixed.  I spent good money on this only to be totally frustrated.  And it says don't worry you can always print and send in????  Why did I buy the state then?  And, as far as I know NYS requires e-filing.

Well here we are trying to e-file taxes and I just ran into this same problem, the 2020 Deluxe version is telling me I need to do an update when I try to do an update it tells me I'm up to date. Has anyone really found a fix for this mess? Shame on intuit for allowing this error to go on so long. I've used TurboTax longer than I can remember, going to rethink that decision next year.

Did anyone get this problem to clear.  Tried downloads, restarts, still it won't clear to transmit.  I've been a Turbo Tax user since 2002.  Never had this problem before.  Why did Turbo Tax not do a correction download on the package to correct.  Help!

After a week or two, it finally just updated and worked for me. I had tried multiple times before that and was told it was all up to date. I assume that Intuit has not correctly implemented the update checking, so that it had to wait until the software needed to be updated for some other reason.

All of my other efforts were a waste of time.

the federal tax wouldn't efile - says update needed. what do i need to do?

    April 19, 2021

The only thing that worked for me was waiting (a week or two). TurboTax should give you the option to force an update, but they don't, and apparently the program sometimes fails to recognize that the files it told you to wait for are ready, so it doesn't update until something happens that it recognizes as requiring an update.

    March 9, 2022

using latest iMac software, the file won't transmit 2021 return.

I assume if there were updates, turbo tax would automatically inform me to update.

No message hence - can't get around loop

If some forms aren't final yet, how do I know when they are?

We recommend that you sign up within TurboTax to be notified when your form is ready. When you try to e-file a form that's not available yet, you'll get a message with the option to sign up.

Please click on Review, on the left menu.  You may see a message "Some of your tax forms are not ready".  Below the message, you can select the link that says "I want to sign up for email notifications

Please see the TurboTax FAQ's below for form availability:
