My teenage son works part-time & made less than $1,400 last year.  Federal taxes were not withheld & less than $2 were withheld for state taxes. Does he need to file?

You do not report your son's income on your return.

You can claim him as a dependent.

As his income reported on form W-2 is less than the standard deduction of $12,400, he is not required to file a tax return. Also as he has no Federal tax withheld and very little state taxes withheld, it is not worth filing a state return to receive less than $2 refund.

No he does not need to file a tax return.   If he had more tax withheld he would want to file for a refund, but unless he wants less than $2 back, he does not need to file a tax return.
