The irs said I didn't deserve the eic/and wanted to know how was it calculated. I did not have a clue.

You do not have to have a dependent to be eligible for the EIC, which is automatic if you qualify.

You must be within the income requirements and be age 25 thru age 64 to be eligible.  See this IRS website for EIC eligibility requirements -https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/individuals/earned-income-tax-credit/eitc-income-limits-maximum-credit-amounts
