The TurboTax program did not claim the life learning credit (LLC) for me. I already filed the return. How to reach out to the customer service team?

During review the program identified LLC (I didn't change anything) and update the refund amount. While I already e-file the return. What should I do? Thank you.

Do you have this backwards "If Box 1 is more than Box 5 on the 1098-T, there should not be an Education Credit unless you claim part of the scholarship (Box 5)  as income to gain the credit"?

Box 1 are your expenses and they would have to be MORE THAN Box 5 (scholarship) to GET the credit, no?

Yes, you are correct, I will edit the previous answer.

You say 2xxx in Box 1 (Tuition received by school)

and

3xxx in Box 5  (Scholarships received by school)

So if the scholarships were more than expenses there would be no education credit

To clarify, how did you review if you already filed?

Please look at your 1040 line 17

Schedule 2 line 3

and Form 8863

and tell us what was reported.

Also what was reported on your 1098-T?

Did you add education expenses not listed on your 1098-T?

Did your taxable income increase (did you claim scholarships as income) to get the Lifetime Learning Credit?

Hi,

Thank you for your reply.

I filed Federal return first. The next day when I was working on the state return, I just went through the Federal return deduction part again. I did not update any information. This time the program shows that I am eligible for LCC and the refund amount updated automatically.

In the already filed 1040 form, line 17 Schedule 2 line 3 shows nothing.

On the student information worksheet part III, "Is this student qualified for the Lifetime Learning Credit?" The answer is "No. Courses not part of postsecondary degree or program to acquire job skills". While in the updated 1040 form (not filed), this answer is Yes. Don't know what's wrong.

On 1098-T, Payments for tuition (1) and Scholarships (6) are reported.

No new education expense was added. Taxable income keeps the same.

What kind of courses were you taking?

What is in Box 1 and Box 5 on 1098-T?

Research course in the graduate degree program. Box 1 is $2xxx. Box 5 is $3xxx.

If Box 1 is less than Box 5 on the 1098-T, there should not be an Education Credit unless you claim part of the scholarship (Box 5)  as income to gain the credit, but that would change your taxable income 1040 line 9.

If the program decided to do that, since sometimes the tax on the taxable scholarship is less than the reduction in tax liability for the credit, you would see a difference on Schedule 1 line 8r.

Are you using Online or desktop?

Did you also receive a W-2 for a Fellowship?

Are you able to see your 1040 that was filed and also a 1040 when adding the LLC?

If Yes, beside the LLC and your refund, did any other entries on your 1040 change?
