This was a bait and switch - from free to $154. My return is not much more than that. Why did I have to pay so much or any at all?

You are using the Deluxe Online versionwhich is not free You may have started the free version but something in your return caused you to be upgraded to the paid version. The free version is very limited and can only be used with a w-2,1099-int/div combined less than $1500, and standard deduction. Anything else requires the paid version. If you think you have been mischarged you can call customer support at 800-446-8848  and mention billing issue.
