To answer "Which state is my $$$ of exempt interest from? My 1099-Int doesn't have a state listed, do I leave the "State" box blank or do I put in the state I live in?

You could leave it blank.

It means what state(s) obligations paid the interest. For example if it is Georgia bond, its GA. If its a mutual fund, they probably have all the states. The website, tax info section, will have the details on what % of the income is attributable to each state.

The purpose of this is:

Your state won't tax tax exempt interest from obligations of your state. It will tax the interest from other states.
