Troubleshooting TurboTax

As I'm completing my taxes, TurboTax keeps referencing a Schedule C 1099-NEC, which I had in 2019, but don't have in 2020.  I have already deleted it from my 2020 income, but when the system reviews my return at the end before filing, it still says I have to fix it and asks for the payer's EIN number.  The system won't let me proceed with my taxes without this.

I tried bypassing it to see if I could file without fixing this online, paid TurboTax their fee but it came back around to the 1099 question at the end.  Also, in the process, I misread one of the questions about the IRS calculating certain pieces of my NY return and now I am no longer able to e-file and can't figure out how to fix it.  I tried clearing and starting over, but since I already paid the TurboTax fee, it won't let me.  Is there any way to fix this and what do I do about this non-existent 1099-NEC?

If you have not filed, you will have to remove the form from the program.  Here are the steps:

In TurboTax online version:

  • Sign into your account, select Pick up where you left off
  • Select Tax Tools, click on the drop down arrow
  • Select Tools
  • Under Other helpful links, choose Delete a form
  • Select Delete next to Form 1099-NEC and Continue with My Return

You can return to your state return section to make correction.  Here are the steps:

  • On your left menu, select State
  • Follow prompts
  • On-screen, Status of your state returns
  • Under New York state, select Edit

Generally, most taxpayers who receive a Form1099-NEC are considered as self employed by the IRS and required to pay self-employment tax.  You will need to file a Schedule C reporting both income and any related expenses.  You will also need to file a Schedule SE to pay your self-employment tax.  If you received the form for a non-self employment income, you will enter it as Other Income on your Form 1040.  Follow the prompts in the TurboTax program and it will take you there.  To learn more, click here: 1099-NEC
