Question

Trying to clam my child as a dependent who is 1 years old. I'm trying to find out why for that credit is only 77.00. I was told that credit should be higher around 1000.

First of all make sure that you entered in My Info that your child lived with you the WHOLE year.  Make sure you entered the child's Social Security number.  And as for child-related credits--they are affected in a big way by how much income you earned by working.  If you only earned a small amount of income, your child-related credits will be low amounts.

The money you hear about people getting for just filing a tax return claiming kids requires them to  have some earned income (wages or self employment). Without earned income, they are not eligible for the "refundable" Earned Income Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit.  Both credits are calculated on the amount of earned income you have. No earned income means no "refund". A small amount of earned income means a small refund.

There is no fixed amount per child ("I was told that credit should be higher around 1000"). The (up to) $2000 child tax credit does not even start calculating unless you have at least $2500 of earned income

A child can be the “qualifying child” dependent of any close relative in the household. If you live with someone else, e.g. your parents, it may be better if they claim your child.
