TT 2024 - 1099-R Box 2A doesn't flow to 1040 - Bug

I made qualified charitable distributions (QCD) from an IRA. I changed box 2A to reflect the Box1 amount less the QCD.

The amount in Box 1 is trasnferred to form 1040 instead of the amount in Box 2A.    If i removed the & from Box 7, i.e. no entry, and then reslect 7 for Box 7, the value in Box 2a gets correctly transferred to the 1040.

I can replicate this behavior.

I suggest there is a bug in the form. I am running version 024.000.0272 on Windows 11 Pro.

My QCD works right.  Do not change box 2a.  After you enter the 1099R you have to keep going through all the follow up questions and get to a screen asking if you made a Charity Donation.

Thank you  VolvoGirl.

I used the Step By Step Format and it does work correctly.  It puts the amount of the QCD in section 13 of the 1099-R and includes it  in the value shown on 1040 line 4b

I appreciate your speedy and accurate response.

I have been a Volvo guy since 1999.

Cheers

Whoa.  What is section 13?  And it should be on 1040 line 4a and not included in 4b.   Did you mistype that?

Hello,

Case Number:  1545860507

Token Number: 13563578259128319-149988842

I sent a copy of my return to Tech Support (see Token number above).

Form 1040 Line 37: "Subtract line 33 from 24. This is the amount you owe"

$37,981 - $34007 = $3974

Why does TurboTax calculate $3,983 ?

Thanks,

John

@jc175  You have a penalty on line 38 that is added on.

You might be able to eliminate it or at least reduce it.  You can go to Federal Taxes tab or Personal tab, under Other Tax Situations and select Start by the Underpayment Penalties. You will answer a series of questions that may reduce or eliminate the penalty. Or you can elect to have the IRS figure the penalty for you.  It's form 2210.

It's under

Federal or Personal (for Home & Business Desktop)

Other Tax Situations

Additional Tax Payments

Underpayment Penalties - Click the Start or update button

If you have the desktop program you can switch to Forms Mode (click forms in the upper right (left for Mac)) and open the 2210 form.  If the 2210 doesn't show up in the left column, click on Open Forms at the top of the left column.  Type 2210 in the search box and open the 2210 form.  Check box C to let the IRS calculate it.

Thanks @VolvoGirl! That solves my problem.  I'll also look into reducing the penalty as you suggested. I appreciate your quick response.
