Turbo Tax did not enter CASDI number from box 14 of my W2 in line 74 of 540 for CA state tax

I used TurboTax Premier Desk top last year as well as this year.

  • For 2022, the value of CASDI number from box 14 of my W2 was entered in line 74 of 540 for CA state tax: Excess SDI (or VPDI) withheld. That value was added to Total payments from which the amount I owed was calculated.
  • For 2023, I see the value of CASDI number from box 14 of my W2 in Wage and Tax Statement (of generated pdf) - which means it captured the value. But line 74 of 540 for CA state tax: Excess SDI (or VPDI) withheld - is empty and hence was not added to Total payments resulting in me owing more state tax.

Please help me understand the difference or if I am missing something.

Why did you have an excess CASDI?  Do you have more than 1 employer?  It shouldn't just put the amount from box 14.  You only get back excess if you had 2 or more employers and together they took out more than the max.  And the rate changes each year.

For 2023.  CASDI is 0.90% on a max of  $153,164 of wages. Max is 1,378.48.  The SDI Withholding Rate for 2023 is 0.90 percent of wages up to a max of $1,378.48.

For 2022 the maximum tax is $1,601.60 per employee, per year ($145,600 x .011).   The SDI Withholding Rate for 2022 is 1.1 percent. The SDI taxable wage limit is $145,600 per employee for calendar year 2022.  The maximum to withhold for each employee is $1,601.60

Thank you. Understood. I had 2 employers in 2022. That's probably the reason.
