When does the intuit electronic filing center start taking 2016 returns?

The actual date has not been given out yet, some are saying the 1/3. TurboTax support has been closed for the holiday until today. You can contact them if you would like.

Even though TurboTax will let you e-file early, the IRS is not accepting returns until January 23rd. Which means TurboTax will hold your return on their servers until the IRS opens their e-file system. You will not be able to get your return back or make any changes to it.

Beginning in 2017, a new law approved by Congress requires the IRS to hold refunds on tax returns claiming the EITC or the ACTC until mid-February. The IRS must hold the entire refund — even the portion not associated with the EITC and ACTC — until at least Feb. 15. This change helps ensure that taxpayers get the refund they are owed by giving the agency more time to help detect and prevent fraud.

Why TurboTax even mentions January 3 is a real doozer of a question because it makes no sense, and in fact is apparently untrue as well! Once they do open for submittal, maybe later this week but so far no one here knows!, they will stick your filing in a vault and not do anything with it until the IRS opens on January 23, 2017.
No point rushing it turns out!!!! And lots to lose too in fact!

Certainly, you can start entering all the various personal data that you have, and if you want to try to guess what your Form W-2 will look like and also any Forms1099 that you might receive, such as Interest Income, feel free to do so for ESTIMATION purposes only.
However, read this post to learn why others have found it to be a very serious mistake to go ahead and submit your filing before you have gotten all your W-2s and 1099s.
