Question

Turbotax asks me if I received stimulus in 2020. When I select "no", it gives me a $1200 stimulus credit when I was claimed as a dependent on my parents 2019 return. Why?

According to the stimulus calculator I should not be eligible but TurboTax never asks this key question.  And I used TT last year.  Seems like it should know.

The recovery rebate credit is based on your 2020 tax return.   They mailed those checks out in a hurry last year and had to use either 2018 or 2019 returns..   But the stimulus money was an advance for a credit you get on a 2020 tax return.   If you cannot be claimed as someone else's dependent for 2020 then you are eligible to get the stimulus checks.

I appreciate the reply but the IRS documents, as well as Turbo Tax's Q and A specifically say that you are not eligible for the stimulus checks if you were claimed on someone else's 2019 return as a dependent, which I was.
