Turbotax is asking me to fill out a form 8615 for unearned income, but I do not have any unearned income. How can I tell Turbotax that I do not have any unearned income?

I've checked my information multiple times and I don't see anywhere that indicates unearned income in my records or in Turbotax's menus until I reach the review section. For some reason, I am then asked to fill out my parent's information for over $5,000 of unearned income, which I do not have and have never claimed to have. What can I do to fix this?

Did you enter any of the following items into TurboTax?  These won't be titled ''unearned income'' but are:

  • Interest, dividend, or investment income - any 1099-Ks?
  • Retirement or Social Security income
  • Any 1098-T?  w/ scholarship amounts
  • Alimony or child support
  • Unemployment or workers' comp
  • Gifts, prizes, awards, or winnings - any other income
  • Inheritances
  • Income received while incarcerated, even if it involves active work
  • Rental income (for a rental property in which you do not provide substantial services primarily for your tenant's

The unearned income is usually from investments but it happens a lot with scholarship/grant money too.  Preview your tax return and see what lines you show income on.

Thank you for getting back so soon, and I think you're right. After checking my 1098-T, I realized I entered a portion of my tuition expenses incorrectly, and the amount received through aid exceeded the amount I had reported was spent. I adjusted to the correct values listed on my documents, and there is no longer any unearned income being wrongfully reported.

Again, thank you so much for the help!
