TurboTax Online School District Tax Error

TurboTax Online's filing tools do not ask for taxes paid to the school district throughout the year or import taxes paid to the school district from a W-2. There is no way to manually correct the form. Because of this, the filing indicates a balance is due (assuming no taxes have been paid), when I should be due a refund. Because it also believes no taxes have been paid it also tries to generate "coupons" for estimated payments for 2025.

First, you need to make sure your withholding from your W-2 flows to your SD-100. Please follow the instructions below:

    1. Open or continue your return.
    2. Go to W-2 and click on the pencil icon to edit.
    3. Under the Local taxes section (Boxes 18-20), please ensure that your school district number is in Box 20.
    4. Click Continue.

Then, enter any additional SD-100 payments you made for 2024. To do so, please follow the instructions below:

    1. Open your return.
    2. Click on Federal on the left hand side of your screen.
    3. Click on Deductions & Credits.
    4. Click on Estimates and Other Taxes Paid.
    5. Click Start next to Income Taxes Paid.
    6. Scroll down to Other Income Taxes Paid in 2024.
    7. Click Start next to Withholding not already entered on a W-2 or 1099.
    8. Select School District Tax, OH and enter the amount.
    9. Click Continue.

This is Ohio Form SD 100 for additional detail purposes.

Thank you so much! This solved the issue, but although it stated I'm due a School District Tax refund in the interface that refund was not added to my total Ohio refund at the top. Is that normal because it's technically not from the State of Ohio even though Ohio administers and processes it?

That is correct. The SD-100 overpayment is not included in the Ohio overpayment amount calculated on your IT 1040. To confirm this, you can preview your tax forms.

To preview, please follow the steps below:

    1. Sign in to TurboTax.
    2. Open or continue your return by selecting Start or Continue.
    3. Select Tax Tools from the menu.
    4. With the Tax Tools menu open, you can then:

Your Ohio state refund would be listed on Line 27 of your IT 1040. Your school district tax refund would be listed on Line 22 of your SD 100.
