TurboTax Premium Multiple Users and State Taxes; what's included

I have TurboTax Premier. I've used the product for decades.

I'm in Virginia with kids in different states that have income taxes: NY, NJ, PA.

Each of us only needs to file the state form for our state. No one is doing more than one. The license says it's good for 5 people and includes one state. Great, but what does that mean about the states?

  1. Does that mean each person gets one free state? or
  2. Does that mean it's one state for all the licenses and each state in addition to that requires a fee.
  3. If two are in the same state, would we need to pay for each of them or can they share the same state. In the past, we all shared Virginia but I don't know what happens once we start adding more.

Thanks.

@TaxDonor1    When you buy any extra state beyond the one free one...that state can be used for any person who needs that state's software...as many times as needed.  Each time that any state is e-filed, that e-file fee is $20-$25  (except that e-filing NY forms is free).

I think your #2 fits.   You get 1 free state PROGRAM download.   That would probably be for your VA.   It can do all returns for that state.   So you would need to buy NY, NJ & PA state programs at $45 each.  Each state program can do multiple returns for that state.

You can install the Desktop program on 5 computers you own.  It can do unlimited returns but only efile 5 federal.   More than 5 you can print and mail.   Each state return (including the first one) is $25 to efile or you can print and mail state for free.  Oh, but NY is free to efile.

    Did I cover everything?

Thanks. That sounds fair. I wasn't planning to get the additional state plans for myself but now I realize I need them to help my kids.

This is the first time I'm having my daughter fill out her taxes. She bought the NJ plan, then sent me her tax2024 file for review. When I tried to open it, it said error 190 and that I needed to download the NJ tax forms. I clicked "Download my state forms", and prompts me to buy it. That's not good. And I wasn't even interested in reviewing her NJ numbers yet, just seeing her IRS data. But I can't even see that until I buy and download the NJ tax forms.

Did she buy it wrong? She used my credit card and TurboTax account when she bought it. Or was I supposed to buy it, then let her use it. How do I fix this just to see her numbers? Thanks.

If she used your account I think the state download will be listed there so you can download it.  Did you try starting a new return, enter some info then go to the state tab and try to download it?
