Two W-2s for 2019, not sure why income is different?

I am a resident of NJ.

I have received two W-2 documents from the same employer. The differences in the W-2s:

-are that the employer use only box has two different numbers.

-Gross pay is different by about $400.

-Boxes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, are all different

-Box 16 & 17 is also different.

I have been waiting to file because I am scared and confused about this. My wage rate changed since I worked a minimum wage job so I'm not sure how to enter any of this and I'd like to do it right before i start. ANy help would be greatly appreciated!

Ah, box D "Control number" is different as well.

You should contact your employer and ask why you got two separate W-2's.

Is one of them a W-2C? This would be a corrected W-2 for the first one. If this is the case, use the W-2C to file your return.

It is not normal to receive two from the same employer. The Control Number is used by the payroll department at your employment to uniquely identify a W-2 in their system, it is not needed or used by the IRS.

There is a small chance that one of the W-2s is marked as "Corrected"; if so, use only the corrected W-2.

However, I think it is more likely that your employer changed its organization and EIN (employer identification number) during the year, and the normal accounting practice would be to issue one W-2 for the first part of the year using the old EIN and another W-2 for the next part of the year with the new EIN.

Do the amounts in the box 1 (Wages) on the two W-2s add up to what you think you made for the year? Then, enter both W-2s into TurboTax.

If you are still unsure, just call your employer ask them if the two W-2s were for different parts of the year - if so, enter them both.
