Unable to e-file NYS IT-201

Last week I was unable to e-file my NYS tax return IT-201. The TT program states that I have a tax situation in my return that makes it ineligible for e filing. Reason given is that "Returns with a federal return which is ineligible for electronic filing." "The rules are set by the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance" Good news you can print your new york return and file it by mail.

No indication is given as to which form is causing this issue. In all the years I have used TT, I have never, ever run into this issue. The TT program found no errors in my federal tax return.

A review of the NYS Tax website gives no indication of any issues with filing my return online. It is also my understanding that you can only file your NYS tax return online.

When I spoke to customer support last week (today is 1/30/24), I was advised that NYS wasn't accepting returns until 1/29/24

If that advice was correct, then I do not understand why I cannot file my return...today is 1/30/24

This has been resolved. Try closing TurboTax, clear your Cache and Cookies, and reopen TurboTax.  Make sure you have ran all updates.

Updating my post. According to TT, both the 1040 and NYS tax form IT-201 is ready for efiling: https://form-status.app.intuit.com/tax-forms-availability/formsavailability?albRedirect=true&product=Turbotax_online&bu=cg

This page also states that NY form IT-2 is unsupported for e-filing.

What's the fix here? NYS requires that forms be e-filed

Further update. I spoke to the NYS tax dep't and advised them of the issue stated above.

They have no information on their end that supports the error message that the software provided--namely that the state tax return cannot be e-filed because of rules set by the NYS Tax dep't.

In other words, this is a software issue.

So TT. Are you going to fix this issue. I paid for this program because it provides e-filing functionality. If I cannot e-file my state tax return, because of a software issue, then I did not get the benefit of my bargain.

I got the same exact line from Turbo Tax.  I have no errors on federal or state return.  Hopefully the only problem is its too early to file.  Time will tell.  If its too early to file electronically the program should tell you that up front.

"If its too early to file electronically the program should tell you that up front."

Exactly. And to continue. . .I tried to efile my federal return only, and then file my State return later. The TT program initially indicated that I could do so, but then when I tried to initiate the federal E-file, the program said I had to mail it in. . .indicating that it was a matter beyond their control (e.g tax laws, regulatory changes. . .etc)

I was able to maneuver through the phone prompts to reach customer service ( Like Christopher Columbus in search of the new world). Even they were flummoxed. The best that could be explained was that TT was working on it and try to e-file later.

Intuit. I know you monitor these boards. You need to pick up your game and make sure that your turbotax software is ready for prime time. . .with free efile becoming more and accessible, the question becomes . . .why am I continuing to purchase your product?

I don't know why this took me here. I simply tried to e-file my federal return, but it wouldn't let me. Seems to be a future update regarding a Schedule C entry on paying a sub-contractor. At first they said, "Update on 2/21" perhaps (I forget), then "update on 2/28".  Now they say, "Update on 3/7." I figured I'd just file and correct later if need be. BUT, I could not e-file. Yes, this is the first time this has happened with TurboTax (Home & Business), but it is very annoying!  Also, to e-file Colorado I had to pay $20 out of my federal refund. Ok. When I finalized this, however, they added another $40 fee for processing.  What?  No thanks. I'll do it myself!
