I sold uncovered mutual fund shares purchased in the 80's and 90's . The mutual fund had stock spilts and was transferred to 2 different mutual fund companies since then .I Finding the original purchase price or cost basis has proven impossible. I'm resigned to declaring zero cost basis but how do I enter my various unknown purchase dates on Turbo Tax?

At the top of the screen where you enter the details of the sales transaction, there should be drop down box for "Sales Section".  Assuming you received a Form 1099-B, you will select "Long-term basis not reported to the IRS (noncovered)".

I am not sure where you are at, but you could try "various" or "var" which works in some places.

Otherwise come back and tell me what screen you are on.

I am on the page that asks info on the 1099-B sale . It's asking me for either the date or something other than th a date. There is a various option on the something other than the date option but how do I show that it was a long term  not short term sale
