In order to receive your unemployment tax refund, you would need to file your 2020 tax return - federal and state (if applicable).
For federal tax return purposes - if your modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) was less than $150,000 in 2020, you may be eligible to exclude the unemployment compensation and receive a tax refund. The modified AGI for purposes of qualifying for the exclusion is calculated by subtracting your total unemployment compensation from your AGI. If you are eligible, you should exclude up to $10,200 of your unemployment compensation from income on your 2020 Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR.
Some states may tax your unemployment income and some may exclude them. Hence, whether you would receive a tax refund from your state for the unemployment compensation depends on where you live.
