Question

US resident alien for tax purposes in Robinhood

Hi,

I declared myself as a non-US person for tax purposes in Robinhood (by mistake) and received a 1042-S form.  However, I realized I was actually US Resident Alien for tax purposes for 2022 and should have received a 1099 form. I contacted Robinhood support to request an amendment but I was told since I was a non-US person as of December 31,2022 I will not receive a 1099 form for 2022.

How do I file my 1040 resident form with a non resident Robinhood supplemental form?

Thanks for your help!

Occasionally a U.S. resident filing Form 1040 will receive Form 1042-S. There is no menu line in the resident return to enter this form, since it's a form intended for nonresident filers, so you will need to examine the form to determine the nature of the income and the best place in the return to enter it.

If the form reports dividends, then enter it as if you received form 1099-DIV.

If it reports interest, enter it as if you received form 1099-INT.

If it reports stock trades, enter it as if you received form 1099-B.
