After submitting my Virginia State tax using turbotax I received a letter from Virginia Tax Department requesting I submit proof of state tax payed on my 1099 R.  So is it possible to attache a copy so it is submitted by turbox tax or must I just mail it?

No, you can't attach a paper copy, or PDF,  of your 1099-R to an e-file. If the VA DOR sends you a letter, you will just need to mail in a copy in response.

@redup   No, you must mail them a copy.....(though sometimes they provide a FAX telephone number, if you know how to FAX it ).  Read their instructions carefully. Sometimes they want a copy of the letter they sent you too...And make sure you keep copies of both for yourself.

Sometimes they ask for this because either:

1)  They think you mistyped something abut VA withholding

or

2) They didn't get a copy themselves from the provider of that 1099-R yet.

Have seen one other post here in the forum about a 1099-R provider who did not yet send the state, whatever electronic notifications for all their 1099-R forms to the state(s) involved.   Kind-of late, but it's possible.
