W-2 info entry for just me had a large refund amount, entered husbands resulted in less refund. Way to get higher refund if we file separately? Can we?

Not at all likely to get a better combined refund by filing separately.

What happened? When you added your husband's W-2 income to what was already in the tax return (your income), you probably moved into a higher tax bracket. You may have seen exactly the same thing if you had entered his W-2 first.

Each employer withholds tax based on the income they are paying their employee, not what might get added in by a spouse or another job. The combined income will have a bigger tax bite than either income by itself.

Filing separately takes away a lot of other tax breaks.

Married, Filing Separately (MFS) or Married, Filing Jointly (MFJ)?
