W2 from employer my husband never worked for

We received an email from Turbo tax that my husband W2 was ready but it was from an employer he's never worked for and I don't think it's even in our state. Did TurboTax mess something up or did someone use his social? I haven't noticed any issues on our credit reports.

Why do you think TurboTax messes something up? W-2's do not come from TurboTax. W-2's come from employers. Is it possible that your husband's local employer is actually owned by a larger company that is out of state? ---that is quite common.

And....an email telling you that a W-2 is ready was just a marketing email. TT does not really have your W-2. They just want your business. Your husband's employer has until January 31 to issue his W-2.

He works for USPS and receives his via mail. I didn't realize they would do that as a marketing tool. I thought maybe they somehow sent us the wrong info since we've used them for years with our taxes. Thanks for the info!

You would have to view it and see what's there. sometimes company A is a subsidiary of company B and it's company B that issues the w-2. Another possibility is that the company's payroll may be handled by a payroll processor in which the W-2 could come from them. Your husband will have to review it to see if it matches what he got paid.

it could be identity theft or even a worker entering an incorrect SSN on the w-9 he filed with his employer. Personally, never had a case where an employer asked to see my Social Security card.

if isn't your husband's w-2 assume identity theft

1) contact the iRS. they get the wage info from the Social Security Adm so will be looking for it on your return unless it's corrected.

2) if possible contact the company and request a corrected w-2

3) contact the FCC 1-877-ID-theft or file a report through the website identitytheft.gov

4) contact the Social security Adm

5) place a fraud alert on your credit reports (someone using your SSN for w-2 purposes will never show up on your credit reports) contact anyone of the following: Equifax, Experian, TransUnion. The others will be informed.
