Question

W2 state income and tax is not transferring correctly to my state tax

I am having to file 2 state taxes,  I entered the W2 state income and tax paid on each state but is not transferring correctly to my state tax.  Both states show Wages to be the full amount shown on Box 1 of W2 form.  Is this correct?  Box 16 and 17 show what wages were reported and taxes reported at each state.  How can I correct this when I am editing my state taxes?  It does not allow me.  I went back and check my federal and it shows correctly.

The states all report your taxes in different ways, so your box 16 entries may be correct and may just be ignored by TurboTax (some states start with the federal numbers from the 1040 and ignore what is in box 16).

The question is what are the states, and what is the state taxable income on the state return - is it appropriate for that state? Also note that some states start with all the income for both states but use income allocation or tax allocation to parcel the correct amounts to each state. Also, it depends on whether you were a nonresident in one of the states - we simply don't have enough information about your return to say for sure.

This is why we offer TurboTax Live, to allow you to contact a credentialed tax professional who can see your return (if you are Online) and answer your specific questions.

Generally, unless your employer fouled up the W-2 (that does happen), you should enter the W-2 as is, and then you should review the state returns to see if they make sense.
