We obtained full legal custody of our daughter's best friend in April of last year. Do we list her as adopted, foster, or other?
How do we label full legal custody of a child? adopted, foster, or other?
Foster child. Legal custody is not adoption but is foster care. This is a favorable status as long as the child was living with you for at least 6 months and one day. If that's the case, you will be able to claim her as a qualifying child and receive the same benefits as you do for your daughter including Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Credit.
