Question

What can I do about the Identity Protection PIN? I never received a letter from IRS giving me one, and I can't get a new one from IRS because of COVID19. What do I do?

You may not need one and I suggest you attempt to e-file without it.  If you are required to enter it, your tax return will be rejected and you can use the online method below to get a new one.

Most taxpayers don't need an IP PIN — the IRS only issues them in select cases.  If you know you need an IP PIN to file your taxes and you lost your CP01A letter (or never received it), you can:

  • Retrieve your IP PIN online at the IRS's Get an IP PIN site; or
  • Call the IRS at 1-800-908-4490 to have your IP PIN mailed to you (this can take up to 21 days)  -  this is an automated service and does work if you need it.

We're unable to issue IP PINs and you won't find them on your tax paperwork. You can only get IP PINs from the IRS.

"You may not need one and I suggest you attempt to e-file without it."

I have tried several times now here on TurboTax, but every time both of my returns are rejected. When I try to fix the problem, I'm asked for my IP PIN. I never recieved the letter TurboTax is claiming I should have, and it says the only way to get a new one is to call IRS (Gives the number and extension) but when I call the message says that they aren't currently accepting calls, because of the Coronavirus.

When I try to use the IRS website to get a new one online, I'm told that my information "doesn't match their records"; I'm sorry, but my name, address, SSN, etc. all from my 2019 and 2018 W2's says otherwise! I'm using the same information I've had my whole life, so I know the info is correct.

You will need to print your return and file by mail, where your return will be processed in the order it is received, or wait for the IRS to open back up to call and retrieve the IP PIN.

Unfortunately, there isn't any other workaround for this since your return requires an IP PIN to file electronically.
