What Federal ID Number should I enter for reporting interest income from my NRE account in HDFC/ICICI bank? Turbotax is not taking 99-9999999.

The entry of an EIN is not required for reporting bank interest. Are you sure you are reporting it in the right place?

This is the correct way to enter bank interest:

  1. Open your return and select Federal.
  2. Select Wages and Income toward the upper left.
  3. Scroll down, or expand the list and find Interest and Dividends.
  4. Expand that section and find Interest on 1099-INT.
  5. Click on Add/ Edit to the right.
  6. Select, I'll type it in myself, and click Continue.
  7. For Received from, enter the name of the investment or the company.
  8. Enter the amount and click continue.
  9. Answer the next question No.

It is not required, but this year TurboTax is making you enter one.  I have been successful with 12-3456789

TurboTax does not require an Employee Tax Identification Number to report interest RECEIVED, only interest PAID.

Please delete that 1099-INT and enter as Interest under INCOME.
