I just completed CA state taxes on a trust, forms 541. When I printed the completed forms the federal tax forms (1041) also printed. Do I need to send in a copy of the Federal 1041 with my state to the CA franchise tax board?

Yes. State taxing authorities normally require a copy of the federal 1041 form and schedules attached to the state trust return. Staple the federal return behind the CA 541, sign the CA 541, and mail.

It is always a good idea to distribute out all income in an estate or trust so it is not taxed at the high trust rates.
