Question

What if i don't know my dependent's income when filling my state tax

In state tax part I'm asked this.  What if I don't know or can't find out?  Does it matter?

My dependent will be filling tax late so we don't know the amount.

If this is for a state tax credit, you can file without the credit and see if you can amend later- but check the filing deadline, sometimes the credit is due separate from the tax return even though it is included with the tax return.  Otherwise, it is best to wait for the income to have an accurate amount.

Thanks for replying.  I'm not seeking credit or anything.  Just want to get it filed.  My dependent full time student daughter files her own tax and I won't necessarily know the amount.  Is it a bad thing for me not to have the amount filled out in my filing?

    Thanks again.

I don't know your question but just want to tell you to make sure on her return she checks the box that says she can be claimed on someone else's return.   That is very important.   She can't file as independent.

You can ask your dependent to provide you with her W-2 form. She should have a tax form, be it a W-2 or 1099-Misc/1099-NEC.
