If the IRS determines that you needed to file a tax return, they will prepare one for you for their own records. If you are due a refund, they keep it since you didn't ask. If you owe money, they will send you a letter, usually about 3 years after the tax return was due.

 

Let's find out if you needed to file. If you were single, under 65 and made more than $10,400, you need to file a return. Head of household, over $13,400 and MFJ if over $20,800. If you were over 65, add $550 to the limits.
