What if I was married up until 09/16/16, does this change my filing status. I believe I owe due to claiming married on my exemptions.

Your are considered unmarried if your divorce was finalized by December 31, 2016. So you may technically file as Single or Head of Household of you have Qualifying Children. Your divorce is considered final when it has been decreed by a court or a separate maintenance agreement has been accomplished.
