It depends on how much, and from what source. Use the tool below as if you were your child.

Does your child need to file? If not, did he/she have federal income taxes withheld? For a child with some W2 earnings, you can likely use the Free version to get his/her taxes back. You will need to create a separate username from your own.

A dependent needs to file if:

  1. unearned income (like interest or capital gains) was more than $1,050.
  2. earned income (like wages) was more than $6,300.

    1. Your gross income was more than the larger of
    1. $1,050, or

    2. earned income (up to $5,950) plus $350.
