What is TurboTax 2021 Running Slow on PC?

I have downloaded the desktop program and it is super slow tabbing from one tab to the next. It is not the internet and it is not the computer.

First make sure the program is up to date and then do not run other programs at the same time or have open windows in your web browser as the program is kind of a memory hog.

Nope. That's not the issue - nothing else is running. And if it was that is no excuse. I am using a new computer with plenty of memory with a higher-end processer.  Every time the program is making a tax calculation it literally takes nine seconds. I am just entering W2 info. This better to resolved quickly. This is clearly a program issue.

TTX rewrote the W-2 entry section this year.  Appears to be a separate subprocess now.

Yes, some full pages take longer to load, but I don't see much change in the speed between the actual entry fields....as long as I click in each box to change boxes.

a...new Windows 11 system with the same RAM should work similarly, but W11 is pretty new and who knows how it is handling new W-2 sub-routine

....but, if you are using "Dynamic RAM Memory" with a SSD , maybe there's an issue there.

I am having the same issue.  I have used TurboTax for 20+ years and this is ridiculous.  I need to do 4 tax returns and it's taking forever to enter ANYTHING.  The delay after entering a field isn't limited to W-2's either - it's K-1's, interest, dividends, EVERYTHING.

I hope they fix this fast or this may be my last year with TurboTax - I'm already beyond disappointed with all the Quicken changes in the past couple years.

Same problem. I've been using TT for years, and never had such headaches. Every step is slow. Every calculation is slow. Constant "program is not responding" messages. Restarting doesn't help. Turning off virus protection doesn't help. Running only TT doesn't help.

    February 10, 2022

TT was very nice when they refunded my money. It actually was easy converting to HR Block - I could upload my 2020 TT data and move on.  There will just be a learning curve.

I am having the slow, painful process of adding my information on over 200 W-2G forms. This is taking me 4x longer to complete.  Turbotax please fix this software problem. My computer is superfast using the I7 with 32 RAM.

If you're using desktop software (CD/download), some users in this thread have said they worked around that problem by entering their information using Forms Mode instead of the step-by-step interview.

Same problem with 2021 Home & Business version.  I just entered 4 W2 and it took forever!  7-10 second delay each time you click or tab to the next field. Task Manager reports the program is Not Responding during that time and then it comes back. Next field entry is then available but go to the next one, it repeats.

I've used TT for 20 years, never an issue.  I have 5 returns to process - this is going to take forever!!

I saw someone mention using forms view - I will try that.

    Please fix this!

Is everyone having this delay issue using the Home & Business version ?

If so be aware that all the downloaded versions handle all the same forms so you can always use the Deluxe for a lesser price (Basic if you don't need a state return).  The only difference in the program is the interview screens ... the H&B version basically takes one Deluxe screen and breaks it into several screens to "assist" you better ... personally I find no real benefit to that bloated program over the lesser priced version.  So either get a refund of the H&B version this year and install the Deluxe instead  or remember this going forward.

I am having a HORRIBLE time with TurboTax Home and Business on a 2021 Windows 10 PC. Core i7 10th Gen processor.

Multiple times I have run CCleaner, closed all other programs, rebooted, etc and each time the program takes over 10 seconds WITH EVERY ENTRY.  So far I see ZERO help from Turbotax in here other than the usual "it's your computer" answer.

I installed from a disk, and deleted the program, thinking I could use my product key to download directly from the TT site, but no............  TT says a "download is already registered to that product key.  SUPER USELESS!

    February 26, 2022

@BradK1  This issue seems to affect  mostly the W2 s/ income  section on the step by step view. As others have noted, the forms view still works well

    February 27, 2022

I took a quick look via forms, but I like the walk through to make sure I dont miss anything.  that workaround may be OK for some folks, but as the other guy said, we paid for a WORKING PROGRAM.

I tried calling in to the help line, but the voice recognition was not smart enough to understand there was a problem with the program.

Hope everyone is getting done what they need!  Peace!

After deleting my TurboTax Home and Business and RE-INSTALLING it, this problem did NOT go away.

The problem is having a lot of W2s to enter, (which I do).

I TRIED to instead download the program from Intuit and hopefully use the product code on my CD package (which the CD sleeve SAYS you can do) , but Intuit said my product key was ALREADY IN USE, and since I bought the program at Costco rather than downloading in the first place, I was out of luck.

So I went on Amazon and bought a download of H&R Block Premium, (about $47 including tax) and installed that.  H&R can import your personal data from last years TURBO TAX generated return, so don't worry about that.  I may be done with TTax FOREVER.

Sorry you're having all that trouble.  As a result, if you've decided not to use your TurboTax software, TurboTax does have an unconditional satisfaction guarantee for the CD/download version during the first 60 days after purchase--no matter where you purchased it.    If Costco won't give you a product refund, then see this FAQ, which also has a link to the online refund request form.

@mesquitebean  I actually returned my copy of TT Home and buz 21 to Costco and got another one because I was advised by TT support… this time I installed through a download instead from the CD … and voila same problem as before ie molasses slow when entering incomes through w2, 1099’s … and the way things are going Intuit flat out is refusing to acknowledge this issue … sad really. 2020 version in the same PC works fine.

Turbo Tax performance is the worst ever this year in 2021 Premier edition. I have never experienced such a bad product. The blue wheel keeps spinning and taking a long time to open up and enter information in fields. I have been with Turbo Tax for over 20 years and never experienced this. This might the last year that I use Turbo Tax.

    February 27, 2022

I hear you.  I made special trip to Costco to return my copy of TT Home & Business.

I'm still in the process of working on my return with H&R Block Premium edition, (which runs just FINE) because I have both W2 and 1099 income.

    March 6, 2022

My personal tax return has many W2G' s requiring each to be included when filing. The program froze up during the process.

My Corporate Tax worked great, so it's not the computer.

    Please advise.

Again you can add up all the W-2G forms and make ONE entry in the program because the IRS does not get that info from your return they also get copies of those forms and all they do is compare your total with the total they have computed.  Entering in all those forms is a waste of time and effort so please skip it.   30 years in the business and I always simply enter the total as gambling winnings  unless there was some fed/state withholding and then I add them all up and make one W-2g entry ... I have had no issues in 30 years doing it this way since this mimics how we used to do it on paper... only the totals were sent to the IRS on the 1040  form.

Experienced same issue - very slow - esp. during W-2 portion. Updated turbox tax, cleaned up desktop (Norton/Dell tools) and still slow.
