Question

What options do I have for filing my taxes next year if I don't want to buy a new computer with Windows 11?

I have been using Turbo Tax Premier edition for years.

You would be able to upgrade your computer to windows 11 or use the online version which does not allow you to use forms mode.

Thanks Vanessa.  I haven't used the online version.  From what you're stating I would only be able to use "step by step" walk through to enter my information. Is that correct?  I like to switch back and forth because in the forms version I often find erroneous data showing up.

@raka1225 You mentioned using an iPad.   You cannot use the desktop download on an iPad or any other sort of mobile device.  The desktop software can only be used on a full PC or Mac.   If you will not have a computer that meets the system requirements to use desktop software, then your alternate way to use TurboTax is to use the online software.

not all systems can be upgraded to run with W11. when you get an update notification look on the right, it should tell you if yoiur system is upgradable to W11 or allow you to check .

hears a link to determine if your cpu can run under w11

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/design/minimum/windows-processor-requirements

then there is online both Turbiotax and others

you could also buy a cheap laptop w11 ready and hook it up to your monitor

don't know what other vendors of self-prepared tax returns will do.

Thanks for the input, Mike. Yes, I'm aware not all PCs can be upgraded.  I've already checked mine and I would have to buy a new one which I don't want to do. I'm looking for other options instead of Turbo Tax if Turbo Tax insists on users having Windows 11.  I don't want to wait until the fall to find out I need to buy a new pc or laptop.  By that time tariffs will probably eliminate a cheap solution.

Has anyone tried using an iPad to file their taxes?  Is Turbo Tax Premier available to use to calculate and file online? Anyone out there with rental property that has used other tax software products?  I'd like to hear any comments good or bad on those products.

Because the online version is limited, I recommend sticking with the CD/downloaded version.

If your computer can't handle next year's software, could you go to a friend or family member's house to use their computer while you prepare your tax return?  Even better, if the friend or family member also uses TurboTax, you can BOTH use the same program (and only pay for the one program between the two of you).
