Question

What's the difference for "Clergy Self-Employment Tax" between selecting paying self-employment tax on wages only, housing only, or on wages and housing allowance?

I would love to have someone help me understand what the different options mean when selecting the "Clergy self-employment tax."

Boxes 3-6 are blank on my W-2.

Any insights would be appreciated.

Almost everyone has to pay SE taxes on "both."  The only clergy who are exempt from all SE taxes are clergy who belong to a religious order that has taken a vow of poverty, or who have an approved religious exemption form.

"Pay SE tax on housing only" would be used if your church mistakenly withheld social security and medicare taxes on your wages.  "Pay SE tax on wages only" is not a situation that would ever come up for anyone, as far as I can figure out.
