What tax situation is requiring us to file by mail, we have never had to do that before? It is not stating what it is that triggered this?

You most likely have some forms in your federal return that have not been finalized. There are several forms that are not expected to be finalized by the IRS until 2/01 (see the FAQ below for the most updated dates). Since the The IRS has put out a notice that they will not be accepting any type of 2017 tax return until January 29, 2017 (unless they pull a few returns from tax preparation company servers for testing.) you do not need to be in a rush to file.  If you were to file online right now your federal return will be sitting on the TurboTax servers waiting for the IRS to start accepting tax returns.
