Question

what to do if not required to file state?

I purchased the more expensive turbotax deluxe that included state but it turns out my income is under the minimum amount required to file taxes in California. What should I do in this situation?

At the prompt: "would you like to use your free state now?" I selected no, because I know I do not need to file state.

Am I able to use the state part I purchased with next year's turbotax, or will I lose it?

Also, when I go to file federal turbotax is prompting me to also file state, should I just select "do not file my state taxes now, I'll do it later" and ignore any further prompts?

Thanks for your help

Even if you are below the minimum income to be required to file a CA return----was any CA tax withheld from your paychecks?   Is there an amount in box 17 on your W-2?  You can file to seek a refund even if you earned less than the filing requirement.

If you are not going to file the state, then just say do not e-file the state when you are on the filing screen.  No, you cannot use the state software next year.  There is new software for each tax year.

All my income is dividend income. No W-2. I don't think I would be eligible for any sort of refund.

No, you will not be able to use the state next year. You can contact TurboTax to ask for the best solution.

Yes, select 'do not file my state taxes now, I'll do it later'.  If you are not required to file you should not send it.
