a question pops up asking why I had a lapse in my HDHP but my 1095-C shows me covered for 12 months

You saw the question that read, "What type of High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) did [name] have on December 1, 2018?"

This question applies only to taxpayers who had an HSA in 2018 and made contributions to it. Unfortunately, many taxpayers who don't have an HDHP policy answer it anyway.

If you did not have an HSA or make contributions to it in 2018, when you answered "Family" or "Self", you inadvertently told TurboTax that you had HDHP coverage in 2018 but because you probably didn't have an HSA in 2019, you never told TurboTax that you had HDHP coverage in 2019.

This is the "lapse" TurboTax is talking about.

Anyway, if you did not have an HSA in 2018 or did have one but did not contribute to it in 2018, please answer "None".
