When will I be reimbursed for paying/filing taxes before the unemployment tax exclusion up to $10,200?

During 2020, I received about $8,800 in unemployment income (PUA). I filed my taxes in February 2021 and after entering my info, was told to pay about $1,300 in federal and state taxes, which I did. A few weeks later, in March, it was announced that the first $10,200 of unemployment would be tax-free. In the email I got from TurboTax, it was stated that I did not have to take any additional action, and would be refunded. It has been 6 months and I have not seen any hint or clue that a refund is on its way to my original form of payment. Am I not eligible? Why hasn't anyone reached out? Should I expect a refund at all? I have friends in similar situations who have gotten their refunds via mail or direct deposit. I don't know what makes my situation any different.

If you filed your tax return before the law was enacted then the IRS will automatically send the refund, if the adjustment did not affect other areas of your tax return. The IRS has been making adjustments on tax returns and issuing refunds. If you have not received your refund yet, the IRS has said that they will be sending refunds throughout the summer which doesn’t officially end until September 22nd.

I have talked to many taxpayers who still haven't received this adjustment so you're not alone! I'm not going to suggest you call the IRS because that is a real challenge these days. I would give them until Sept 22nd and then maybe we will start recommending that taxpayers go ahead and amend to get that refund. We are hoping to get more guidance from the IRS soon. But don't worry, you will eventually get this adjustment even if you have to amend to get it but an amendment takes about 16 weeks so that is an option of last resort.
