If you itemize deductions (Schedule A) you may claim out-of-pocket medical expenses, including medical insurance premiums you pay with after-tax dollars. The deduction is limited to the amount in excess of 7.5% of your adjusted gross income (AGI). Note: Most premiums paid through payroll deductions are pre-tax. You should not enter them in the medical expenses section because you can't get an additional deduction for them. Also, don't enter medical insurance premiums reported on Form 1095-A or Medicare premiums reported on Form SSA-1099. TurboTax will automatically extract this information from the applicable form and include it with your medical expenses.

To enter after-tax medical insurance premiums not entered elsewhere in the program:

  • Continue your return in TurboTax Online. (If your return isn't open, you'll need to sign in and click Take me to my return.)
  • Click Tax Tools (lower left side of your screen).
  • Select Tools.
  • In the pop-up window, select Topic Search.
  • In the I'm looking for: box, type medical expenses.
  • In the results box, highlight medical expenses, sch a, then click GO.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions. Medical expenses are grouped into numerous categories, so you'll go through several screens before you get to insurance premiums: prescription medications, medical professionals, medical facility fees, x-ray and lab work fees, long-term care services, eye care expenses, medical supplies and equipment, medical travel, insurance premiums, and other medical expenses. (Click the screenshot below for reference.)

Note: If using the TurboTax CD/Download software, you'll use the Find function (instead of "Tax Tools") to search for the topic.
