Question

Where can I get a 1099G form with the boxes? I got a paper about my 1099g but it's not the official form.

Form 1099-G is available to view or download on this IRS webpage. Federal, state, or local governments file this form if they made payments of:

  • Unemployment compensation.
  • State or local income tax refunds, credits, or offsets.
  • Reemployment trade adjustment assistance (RTAA) payments.
  • Taxable grants.
  • Agricultural payments.

They also file this form if they received payments on a Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) loan.

A state tax refund from filing the prior year's taxes would only be taxable to the extent there was a tax benefit - i.e., you took an itemized deduction for taxes paid.

If you were going to report a state tax refund received in 2022 as income and reported on Form 1099-G, TurboTax would ask how much you deducted for state and local taxes in 2021 (line 5 from Schedule A).

To find the state tax refund section, go to Wages and Income, select Other Income, and then Refunds Received for State/Local Tax Returns.

Also, the IRS determined that certain payments made by several states in 2022 are not taxable. See this IRS news release and your state tax agency for more information.
