Where do I check if I’m filing as a dependent or independent?

The IRS interactive tax assistant is  a great interactive tool that takes just a few minutes to determine if you are a dependent. You may want to go through it with your parents. If your parents should claim you, then you will file as a dependent.

 

If you already know somebody will claim you as a dependent, you can go ahead with your return. In the personal information, there will be a box to check to indicate that someone else can claim you as a dependent.
