If I did not submit taxes for 2015 and 2016, should I just file from 2017 through 2020? We usually always get money back from the federal return so I would not owe that

It is too late to claim a refund for 2015 & 2016.  April 15, 2021 is the last day to file your original 2017 tax return to claim a refund. If you received an extension for the 2017 return then your deadline is October 15, 2021.

To file your 2017 thru 2019 returns with TurboTax, you would need to download the Desktop software.  The software is installed on your computer & the returns would be mailed.  Do not mail the returns together, mail each year separately.  You can purchase the 2017 thru 2019 from TurboTax at the following website (or you can check a website site like Amazon.

You can file your 2020 tax return with the Online version of TurboTax, or the Desktop software:  See the following

No, you should still file 2015 and 2016 income tax returns, if you're required to file. Do not combine your 2015 and 2016 income tax returns with tax year 2017. Each year is reported independently of any other year,

We no longer sell or support TurboTax products for tax years 2016, 2015, or earlier. If you still need to file a return an older tax year, here are some options:

  • For federal returns, download and print the prior-year IRS tax forms and instructions at the IRS Prior Year Products page, or call 1-800-TAX-FORM (1-800-829-3676) to order.
    • Using search on the IRS page: Enter the form, schedule, or publication you need (for example, 1040 or Schedule A) in the Find field and select Find. This brings up all current and previous editions. The corresponding tax year will be listed in the far right column.
  • For state returns, contact your state's Department of Revenue or visit their website. Most of them let you download prior-year tax forms.
  • Try an internet search, for example, file 2016 return or prepare 2013 taxes.
  • Ask a local tax preparer or CPA for assistance.

Generally, it's no longer possible to claim a refund for tax years 2016 or earlier, as the 3-year statute of limitations has expired. However, you can still paper-file your return so that it's officially on file with the government.

To file 2017, 2018, and 2019 income tax returns,  see  How do I prepare a 2019, 2018, or 2017 tax return?

To file your 2020 income tax return, log on to TurboTax.com, select a version and start filing out the return.
