The specific steps to add income back to federal taxable income that is state taxable varies by state.  However, generally in the state interviews you will arrive at an "Income" section that will be titled along the lines of "Income that XX treats differently."  There typically will be several categories of income topics listed; some will be additions and some will be subtractions.  If there is not a specific topic for the income you are looking for, there usually is an "Other Additions" and/or "Other Subtractions" category to use.

If you have trouble locating a good category for your income/state combination then repost here with the specific income you are accounting for and the state you are working with.

Nothing is working. There is no other category for Ohio. I spent over 2 hours on the phone with various people trying many different things but with no success.

I have tax exempt interest dividends, some of which are taxable by Ohio but I can’t get them to appear on my OhioAdditions to Income form.

There is a place to enter tax-exempt interest dividends in TurboTax. Please try these steps:

  1. Login and continue your return.
  2. Select Federal from the menu on the left, then Dividends.
  3. Add a new 1099-DIV or edit the one you have already entered.
  4. The next screen should show  Tell us if any of these uncommon situations apply
  5. Click on 3rd option. My State doesn't tax all of this interest
  6. Then select in the box below New Jersey (screenshot 1)
  7. On the next screen click on My form has info in more than just box 1, this will open the detail where you will add the exempt interest on box 14 (screenshot 2)

Enter OHIO instead of NJ. This is just an example
